The 2024 Texas high school football season is officially underway and Week 1 is already in full swing.
UIL 6A Denton Guyer hosts two-time 5A Division I state champion Aledo Friday night in a battle of perennial Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex powers.

FOURTH QUARTER
- Guyer quickly moving the ball down the field after getting the free kick. Wildcats have a first down inside the Aledo 30 near the seven-minute juncture.
- SAFETY DENTON GUYER: Defensive lineman Khyren Haywood converges on Aledo quarterback Gavin Beard for a sack in the end zone, giving the Bearcats the lead with exactly eight minutes left (Guyer, 32-30 | 8:00, 4th)
- Aledo counters Guyer's interception with a pick of its own, as Adrian Fuller grabs a pass deep in his own territory and falls at his own 2-yard line. Still tied with 9:14 left.
- Aledo goes for it on the first play of the final quarter, but Guyer's Jaylon Sterling picks off a pass inside his own 20, ending the Bearcat threat.
- The third quarter has come to an end. Aledo faces a fourth-and-long inside the Guyer 30 when action resumes.
TOUCHDOWN DENTON GUYER: Guyer ties it up once more as Corbin Glasco, who ended the first half by scoring on a kickoff return, took a reverse and went in from 54 yards out. The PAT evens things at 30-all (30-30 | 4:15, 3rd)
- Guyer has punted on each of its first two possessions to start the second half.
- TOUCHDOWN ALEDO: Aledo regains the lead with another highlight reel play, this time Kaydon Finley taking a short pass from Gavin Beard and going to the house for a 72-yard TD. PAT puts the Bearcats back up by seven just 22 seconds into the second half (Aledo, 30-23 | 11:38, 3rd)
HALFTIME
- Aledo outgained Guyer in the first half, 209-147. Bearcat QB Gavin Beard was 9-of-14 passing for 55 yards and a TD, and running back Raycine Guillory had 87 yards on 16 carries with a TD. What is keeping Guyer in the ballgame is special teams. Wildcats scored all their points so far on special teams - three field goals, a blocked punt return for a TD and a kickoff return for a TD to end the first half.
- A wild and entertaining first half, especially the second quarter, comes to an end and it is definitely anybody's ballgame here in Denton.
- TOUCHDOWN DENTON GUYER: What a second quarter for Guyer's special teams. The latest was Corbin Glasco fielding the ensuing kickoff, finding a seam and breaking loose to go in from 83 yards out to end the first half. We are tied again going into the break. Guyer has two special teams TDs and two field goals in the second quarter (23-23 | :00, 2nd)
- Are you kidding me? Holy mackerel, are you kidding me? Aledo just tied the score on the ensuing kickoff return to end the first half.
- TOUCHDOWN ALEDO: Aledo regains the lead with eight seconds left before halftime. On a third-and-goal from the 1, Raycine Guillory takes a handoff and just walks into the end zone. PAT makes it a seven-point Bearcat lead (Aledo, 23-16 | :08, 2nd)
- Aledo converts on fourth down as RB Raycine Guillory gets the handoff and goes for two tough yards. First-and-goal from the 9 with almost 30 seconds left.
- Now it's a fourth-and-1 for Aledo at the Guyer 11. Bearcats appear to be going for it here.
- Aledo has the ball inside the Guyer 15, facing a third down with less than two minutes to go in the half. We have a time out on the field.
- TOUCHDOWN DENTON GUYER: Guyer forces Aledo to punt. But right when the ball lands in the hands of Aledo's punter, Guyer's Zach De Anda comes through the line for a block, and he scoops up the ball and goes in for an easy TD covering 15 yards. Ford Stinson ties it up with the PAT (16-16 | 5:35, 2nd)
- Holy mackerel, what a wild turn of events we have had here in Denton of late.
- FIELD GOAL DENTON GUYER: Guyer placekicker Ford Stinson is 3-for-3 on field goals for the night. His latest traveled 27 yards through the uprights, and now the Wildcats have made it a one-score game (Aledo, 16-9 | 7:35, 2nd)
- FIELD GOAL DENTON GUYER: Guyer marches inside the Aledo 10 before the drive fizzles. Ford Stinson comes on to connect on his second field goal of the night, covering 25 yards (Aledo, 16-6 | 9:37, 2nd)
- TOUCHDOWN ALEDO: On the very first play of the second quarter, as the Aledo band continues to play "I'm Still Standing," Bearcat junior tailback Kaden Winkfield breaks loose on a 39-yard TD run. Aledo extends the lead (Aledo, 16-3 | 11:51, 1st)
- During the break between quarters, Aledo's band is playing the Elton John hit, "I'm Still Standing." Can't believe more bands play that song.
FIRST QUARTER
- Aledo forces a fumble on the final play of the quarter, and Lamel Swanson of the Bearcats makes the recovery. Bearcats begin the second quarter with the ball inside the Guyer 40.
- Aledo takes the free kick after the safety and advances inside the Guyer 10 before the drive stalls. But the Wildcats hold as a 25-yard field goal attempt goes wide left in the final seconds of the first quarter.
- SAFETY ALEDO: Now Aledo adds two more points as Guyer was forced to punt, but the snap goes high over the punter's head and into the end zone, and he just kicks it out of the end zone (Aledo, 9-3 | 5:26, 1st)
- TOUCHDOWN ALEDO: Bearcats get a short field after recovering an onside kick attempt by Guyer. They quickly march down the field and take the lead, as on a third-and-goal from the Wildcat 8, QB Gavin Beard finds receiver Kaydon Finley in the front corner of the end zone for six. PAT makes it a four-point Aledo lead (Aledo, 7-3 | 7:18, 1st)
- FIELD GOAL DENTON GUYER: Guyer takes the opening kickoff and quickly moves downfield, getting inside Aledo's 20, before the drive stalls. But the Wildcats take the early lead on a 35-yard field goal from Ford Stinson (Guyer, 3-0 | 10:08, 1st)
- Aledo in all white uniforms. Guyer in silver uniforms, black jerseys and silver pants.
- Here at the C.H. Collins Athletic Complex. Overcast skies right now, but no rain. We should be starting this game on time.

About Guyer
Kevin Sperry led Midwest City Carl Albert to an Oklahoma class 5A title last year and accounted for 2,564 yards and 31 TDs, then moved back to Texas and steps under center at Guyer as a senior. He's SBLive's No. 40 most impactful player in Texas entering the season.

The Bearcats must have a trophy case contractor on speed dial. The winners of the last two 5A Division I titles — and 12 of the last 15 years —opened as the No. 7 overall team in Texas.
