Be a Lifesaver: Celebrate National Minority Donor Awareness Month

August 2024 Announcements | SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University (5)In August, we celebrate National Minority Donor Awareness Month, a special time dedicated to saving and improving the quality of life in our diverse communities. This month, we focus on the importance of organ donation and the incredible impact it can have on those in need.

National Minority Donor Awareness Month evolved from National Minority Donor Awareness Week, which began nearly 40 years ago to bring attention to donation and transplantation in multicultural communities of African American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Native American residents.

People of color make up almost 60 percent of those waiting for transplants. Although donors and recipients don't need to be the same race, matches within ethnic groups can often be more successful. By becoming organ donors and sharing about the life-changing benefits of transplantation, we can help reduce the waitlist and give new hope to those in need.

In New York State alone, over 8,000 people are on organ transplant lists, and every day, 17 people across the U.S. lose their lives waiting. For over 50 years, University Hospital at Downstate’s kidney transplantation program has been a lifeline for countless individuals in Brooklyn. We know firsthand the profound impact of organ donation, providing second chances and renewed lives to those in critical need. Currently, 46 percent of eligible New Yorkers are registered organ donors through the Donate Life Registry where anyone age 16 or older can sign up. Together, we can raise this number and keep transforming lives through the gift of life.

Moro O. Salifu, M.D., MPH, MBA, MACP,Chief of the Nephrology Division at Downstate, shares more about the importance of donations in this critical message.

Let's use this month to learn, share, and act. When you register to be an organ donor, you can save a life and give hope to those awaiting a second chance. Together, we can make a difference.

It's National Immunization Awareness Month: Vaccinate For A Healthier Future

August 2024 Announcements | SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University (6)August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. Vaccines protect us from serious and sometimes deadly diseases, and staying up-to-date on immunizations is crucial for maintaining public health.

Immunization not only protects those who receive the vaccine but also helps to protect the entire community by reducing the spread of infectious diseases. This is especially important for vulnerable populations such as infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

During NIAM, we encourage everyone to check their vaccination status and consult with healthcare providers to ensure they are fully protected. Whether it's the flu shot, childhood vaccines, or vaccinations for travel, staying informed and proactive about immunizations can make a significant difference in our collective health.

We’re excited to share a special message from Dr. Michael Augenbraun, where he talks about why vaccinations are essential for our community. Don’t miss his insightful video!

We invite you to call us today to schedule your immunization appointment. Our healthcare professionals are ready to help you stay protected and healthy. Join us in spreading the word about the benefits of vaccines. Together, we can protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities from preventable diseases.

Call us at 718-270-7207 to book your appointment now!
